About Valparaiso

Valparaiso operates both an in-town bus network and an express commuter service to downtown Chicago. The V-Line's Green, Yellow, and Brown services connect destinations around the city, including Valparaiso University, while the ChicaGO Dash uses coach buses between downtown Valparaiso and downtown Chicago. The city is the seat of Porter County in northwestern Indiana and home to Valparaiso University, a comprehensive independent Lutheran institution. Founded in 1859 as a coeducational college, the university reported 2,142 undergraduates and 456 graduate students in fall 2024. Valparaiso's population was estimated at 35,177 in July 2025, up from 34,151 in the 2020 census. community activity is spread among downtown, the university, and a large recreation system. Valpo Parks maintains more than 750 acres, with 24 miles of pathways, 15 miles of trails, 14 playgrounds, 28 athletic fields, two golf courses, and a dog park.

Organizers scheduled the 47th annual edition for September 2026 with a parade, hundreds of vendors, music in Central Park Plaza, races, and children's activities. Valparaiso University adds Division I athletics, music, and other public events; its 2025-2026 performance schedule included the Valparaiso Community/University Concert Band alongside student ensembles. The Valparaiso Branch of the Porter County Public Library System provides seven-day service and current programs ranging from storytimes and science activities to a book club.
