San Rafael, NM

San Rafael lies in Cibola County along State Road 53, about three miles south of Grants and a short drive from Interstate 40. The community's name arrived in 1868 after Hispanic settlers from Seboyeta established a village around the old Ojo del Gallo area. Before that name settled in, the site served the military: hay, grass, adobe, and lumber supplied the first Fort Wingate, which stood at San Rafael from 1862 to 1868. That gives this small place a much bigger story than its size suggests.

Today, San Rafael sits in the high desert between Grants and the volcanic country of El Malpais. State Road 53 carries local traffic toward the interstate, the county seat, and the communities around Mount Taylor. The old fort is gone, but the area still holds layers of Hispanic settlement, military movement, Indigenous history, and regional travel. Families use Grants for many services, while San Rafael keeps the feel of a village shaped by one road, open country, and the memory of an earlier post on its southern edge.
