About San Simeon

San Simeon is an unincorporated coastal community at San Simeon Bay in San Luis Obispo County, where the 2020 census counted 445 residents. State Route 1 passes through the area, roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The original townsite grew around San Simeon Bay as a nineteenth-century shipping point, with successive wharves handling coastal traffic before the highway became the main way through.

Hearst Castle02

San Simeon's coastal history reaches back far beyond Hearst. Chumash people inhabited the area, while Hearst Castle later made the hills above town a major landmark and visitor destination. Seven miles north, the Piedras Blancas rookery brings northern elephant seals to the shoreline. Hearst Memorial Beach and the surrounding state park add another local edge, while Coast Unified School District serves San Simeon and nearby rural areas. The community's map joins bay, highway, castle, wildlife, and older Indigenous history in one narrow stretch of Central Coast. The coast still makes the highway trip feel like a shoreline journey.
