About Sanborn

Sanborn is an O'Brien County railroad town that still carries the marks of being a division point. The Milwaukee line arrived in the late 1870s, and the city took its name from George W. Sanborn, the railroad superintendent who oversaw the Iowa and Dakota division. Sanborn incorporated in 1880; two years later its young men briefly carried off Primghar's county records in a courthouse-seat squabble, then returned them the next day. Today Miller Park and its golf course give the old rail town a current gathering spot, and Railroad Days keeps the origin story on the calendar.
