Sand Rock, AL

Sand Rock is a town split between Cherokee and DeKalb counties on Lookout Mountain. The town incorporated in 1988, but the community reaches back to the 1830s, when Brindley and other families settled along the old trail between Leesburg and Collinsville. The name comes from the sandy rock where a Brindley ancestor stopped beside a spring. A post office served Sand Rock from 1855 to 1903, and the first school began in a log cabin.

Sand Rock School is still the town's most recognizable institution, now a K-12 campus near the four-way stop at Sand Rock Avenue and Friendship Avenue. It has a direct line back to the first log-cabin classroom. Churches, the volunteer fire department, and Sand Rock Cemetery's May homecoming provide the local gathering points. The working map extends beyond town: former cotton farms sit alongside residents who work in Centre, Leesburg, Collinsville, Fort Payne, and Gadsden. Cherokee Rock Village, a boulder-and-climbing site just west of Alabama 68, adds a visible Lookout Mountain landmark.
