Tucked into Ventura County’s scenic Heritage Valley, Santa Paula sits along the Santa Clara River surrounded by rolling citrus groves and steep mountain ridges. Highway 126 runs right through the valley, giving residents an easy drive west to the beaches of Ventura or east toward Santa Clarita and Los Angeles. It feels like a genuine throwback to old California, complete with quiet residential streets, historic Victorian homes, and the giant white "SP" etched high onto the hillside of South Mountain overlooking the valley.

Often called the "Citrus Capital of the World," the town has been an epicenter for lemon and avocado farming since the late 1800s, anchored by major growers like Limoneira alongside independent family orchards. Santa Paula also played a pivotal role in California’s early petroleum industry as the birthplace of Union Oil in 1890. That mixed heritage left behind a distinct architectural character, where working packinghouses and early 20th-century oil landmarks sit comfortably alongside tree-lined neighborhoods.

One of Santa Paula’s most beloved local quirks is its historic airport, originally built in 1930 after the valley recovered from the St. Francis Dam flood. Known nationwide among vintage aviation enthusiasts, the airfield is lined with private hangars holding antique biplanes, experimental aircraft, and classic cars. On the first Sunday of every month, pilots open their hangar doors to the community for "First Sunday" open houses. Locals and visitors can stroll right onto the grounds, admire the collections, and grab lunch as vintage planes take off against the mountain backdrop.
