About Sargent

Sargent is an unincorporated Matagorda County community on Farm Road 457, about five miles northwest of the Gulf of Mexico and 24 miles southeast of Bay City. Its name comes from George Sargent, who came from Cornwall in 1834, settled in the county in 1838, and bought bottomland near Caney Creek in 1844. The creek was deep enough for navigation then, and during the Civil War Sargent used it to move beef and cotton past the Union blockade. Today the place sits among Caney Creek, Cedar Lake, East Matagorda Bay, and the Intracoastal Waterway, with Sargent Beach at the coastal end of the road. Sargent is a Gulf Coast place where a cattle family, a navigable creek, and a very Texas shoreline story come together.
