Satanta, KS

Satanta is a city in Haskell County, six miles east of the Cimarron River on the open prairie of southwestern Kansas. The 2020 census counted 1,092 residents. The town grew around the Dodge City and Cimarron Valley Santa Fe Railroad, which reached the area in 1912, when the land was still known mainly as cattle range. Satanta's roads, school, and grain-and-livestock country all sit in that railroad-era grid.

The name honors the Kiowa chief Satanta, also known as Set'tain-te or White Bear. A post office opened in October 1912, and the town developed quickly as lots went on sale beside the new line. Satanta USD 507 serves local students, and the school's 1958 Kansas Class B boys track championship remains part of town memory. Satanta Day continues the Kiowa connection through an annual celebration, keeping the namesake in the center of the calendar. The result is a small High Plains city where railroad settlement and Indigenous history share the same name.
