About Satartia
Satartia occupies the east bank of the Yazoo River, where a Choctaw name meaning 'pumpkin place' recalls the gourds that once grew nearby. In the early nineteenth century, steamboats carried cotton from this river port toward New Orleans. The river still sets the village's scale and hazards: Satartia Road crosses it on a 1926 vertical-lift bridge, while backwater flooding and the levee system remain part of the setting. Satartia's modern story remains tied to the Yazoo's water, crossings, and Delta farm country.
