Savage, MT

Savage is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Richland County, Montana, on the Yellowstone River and Montana Highway 16 about twenty miles south-southwest of Sidney. The community bears the name of H. M. Savage, a supervising engineer for the U.S. Reclamation Service. Its position beside the river shaped an early shipping economy, with grain farmers and river-bottom beet growers using the place as a local transfer point. The opening of a sugar beet factory in Sidney in 1925 strengthened that agricultural connection.

The lower Yellowstone landscape around Savage was also remade by irrigation. The federal Lower Yellowstone Project carries river water through canals and laterals to cropland, helping turn parts of the valley into fields of alfalfa, hay, grains, and sugar beets. Boating access to the Yellowstone lies near the community, while Savage Public School serves students from kindergarten through high school. Highway 16 and the river place Savage between Sidney and the wider eastern Montana farm country. Its name recalls a reclamation engineer, its fields reflect river irrigation, and its road-and-water setting keeps the community tied to both the Yellowstone and Richland County.
