Sawyerwood, OH

Sawyerwood is a Summit County census-designated place in north-central Springfield Township. The 2020 census counted 1,382 residents. Springfield Township’s history places Sawyerwood in the lake district, where housing clustered around Springfield Lake as the Akron rubber industry expanded. Today the neighborhood sits in the built-up edge of the township, with local streets, homes, school routes, and Akron-area roads shaping everyday movement. The lake remains part of the neighborhood’s name and map.

William T. Sawyer designed the planned community, and his name became the place’s name. A post office opened in 1916 and operated until 1958, giving Sawyerwood its own address before modern suburban mail routes. It remains an unincorporated community, so township government handles roads and services while nearby Akron supplies the larger employment and commercial map. The story is a small one, but it has a clear outline across generations: planned housing by a lake, a former post office, and a local identity folded into Summit County’s urban edge.
