Saxonburg, PA

Saxonburg began as a German farming colony, founded in 1832 by brothers John Augustus and Carl Roebling after they left Mühlhausen, Prussia. John bought about 1,600 acres, laid out the village, and encouraged fellow immigrants to join him; by 1835, the place had eleven houses. The Roebling connection is the big local hook: John’s wire-rope work is remembered at the Saxonburg Museum, next to his workshop in Roebling Park, and the technology later fed into bridge building, including the Brooklyn Bridge. Main Street still carries the early village plan, with the German Evangelical church—begun in 1837—standing at its high point. Saxonburg is one of those places where an engineering story is built right into the town map.
