About Saybrook-on-the-Lake
Saybrook-on-the-Lake is an unincorporated census-designated place in the northwest corner of Saybrook Township on Lake Erie. The 2020 census counted 1,050 residents. State Route 531, also called Lake Road, runs along the community and links it west to Geneva-on-the-Lake and east to Ashtabula Harbor. Interstate 90 is south near Austinburg, so the CDP sits between a lakeshore road and the larger northeast Ohio highway network. Lake Road is also the route to a township park and the shoreline access points.
The name tells you the local geography: this is the lakefront part of Saybrook Township, with homes and roads laid across the low lake plain. Township planning maps track Lake Erie, wetlands, floodplains, coastal management areas, and streams including Cowles Creek and Coffee Creek. Day-to-day services run toward Ashtabula, Geneva, and the surrounding township, while the shoreline sets the weather and the view. Saybrook-on-the-Lake is a small place defined by its edge—one road, one township, and a long northern boundary of open water.
