Scammon, KS

Scammon got its start in the 1870s when the Scammon brothers opened some of the first coal shafts in Cherokee County. The mining boom brought a rush of workers, rail lines, and local businesses, quickly turning the settlement into an active community. It was officially laid out in the 1880s, originally called Scammonville. While Highway 7 carries everyday traffic through town today, the neighborhood streets and quiet blocks still follow the original footprint shaped by the early mines and railroads.

Today, Scammon is a quiet, close-knit town set in the rolling prairie of southeast Kansas, just a few minutes from Columbus and the Crawford County line. The coal shafts have long since closed, but locals remain proud of the town's hardworking roots. It offers a calm, low-key setting with plenty of space, while still keeping you within easy reach of regional jobs, schools, and shopping in neighboring communities.
