About Scanlon
Scanlon grew out of the Brooks-Scanlon lumber story, and the name honors Michael Joseph Scanlon, the company’s president. A post office opened here in 1901 and stayed until 1954, giving the place a clear marker in the old timber-era map. Today Scanlon sits in Carlton County immediately east of Cloquet, with the Saint Louis River along its eastern edge and Duluth about 18 miles away. The city is zoned to Cloquet schools, which fits the way Scanlon sits beside a larger neighbor. The local shorthand is lumber, river, and a small community whose history is written in a company name.
