Schaghticoke village sits beside the Hoosic River in Rensselaer County, within the larger town that carries the same distinctive name. The village’s story is tied to a mixed Indigenous community that included Mohicans and people from several New England tribes who had moved west under pressure from colonial expansion. Later settlement gathered around the river, the road network, and the falls that made water-powered industry possible. By the nineteenth century, mills shaped the gorge and drew workers, stores, churches, and schools into the village.

The river still gives Schaghticoke its physical character, while the surrounding town retains a strong agricultural presence. Historic mill sites, the Knickerbocker Mansion, and the Schaghticoke Fair Grounds connect the area’s farm and industrial chapters.
