About Schleswig
Schleswig is a Crawford County city in western Iowa, laid out in 1899 by German immigrants who brought a North German place-name to the prairie. The city sits about twelve miles north of Denison and fourteen miles south of Ida Grove, among rolling farm fields, drainage creeks, and the roads that connect the small towns of the county. German heritage remains part of the visual and cultural landscape, even as the economy has broadened beyond the first farm settlement.

Schleswig Community School serves the surrounding rural district, and Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison is part of the area's larger care network. Main Street businesses, churches, city services, and school activities make the center a regular meeting point for nearby farms. German place names still sit beside Iowa roads and farm businesses. The city carries the feel of a place built by people who named their new home for the region they left behind, then made it part of western Iowa's agricultural map.
