Scobey, MT

Scobey is the Daniels County seat in northeastern Montana, fourteen miles south of the Canadian border at Highways 13 and 5. The 2020 census counted 999 residents. Scobey Public Schools provides K-12 education, Daniels Memorial Healthcare Center supplies hospital, clinic, long-term care, and emergency services, and the Daniels County Library and courthouse sit on or near Main Street. Grain, ranching, hunting, and county government give the city a working role across the northeastern corner.

The city was named for Major Charles Richardson Anderson Scobey, a cattleman and public official, after local rancher Mansfield Daniels gave the county his own name. Scobey incorporated in 1913, and the settlement's early economy grew from ranching, trapping, trade, and the roads toward Canada and North Dakota. The Daniels County Courthouse occupies a former hotel building listed on the National Register, while the nearby Daniels House carries another layer of local history. Bird and big-game hunting remain part of the regional calendar, alongside school sports, library programs, county meetings, and health services. Scobey is a prairie county seat where public institutions do the work of a whole region.
