Scotland, PA

At the 2020 census, Scotland was a Franklin County census-designated place of 1,353 people in Greene Township, just off Interstate 81 at Exit 20. The community took its name from Scotland, the ancestral home of an early settler, but its most memorable institution came from a different chapter: the Scotland School for Veterans' Children. The school began after the Civil War as a Pennsylvania school for orphans and veterans' children, then operated in Scotland until it closed in 2009. Its long presence gave the unincorporated community a reach far beyond its size.

Today, the I-81 exit and Chambersburg Mall are the obvious map points, with Fayetteville and Chambersburg close by and the South Mountain country stretching east. The old school's closure left a strong local memory, while nearby roads keep Scotland tied to the larger Chambersburg area. This is not a village built around a courthouse or a traditional downtown. It is a roadside community with a school history, a mall, and a name that points back across the Atlantic. Scotland's story is about the institutions that can give a small place a much bigger footprint.
