Seabrook Farms, NJ

Seabrook Farms is a Cumberland County census-designated place within the Upper Deerfield Township community of Seabrook. The 2020 census counted 1,508 residents. The name comes from Charles F. Seabrook, whose truck farm grew into a large agribusiness and company town in southern New Jersey. Seabrook Farms became known for industrial food production, including frozen vegetables, while the surrounding village filled with workers and families from many places. Japanese Americans and Japanese Peruvians arriving after wartime incarceration lived and worked here alongside European refugees and migrant laborers from Appalachia, the Deep South, and the Caribbean.

That mixture is still the heart of Seabrook's local story. The Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center, established by Japanese Americans in 1994, operates as a museum and memorial with photographs, artifacts, oral histories, and a model of the 1950s village. The exhibits keep the company, the workers, and community life in the same frame, which is important in a place where the farm shaped nearly every part of the settlement. Highway 77 runs through the area, and students attend Upper Deerfield Township and Cumberland Regional schools. Seabrook Farms is a small New Jersey place with a surprisingly international past, built around food, migration, and the company town that once organized daily life.
