Sedalia, NC

Sedalia is a small town in eastern Guilford County along U.S. 70, roughly eleven miles from both Greensboro and Burlington. The 2020 census counted 676 residents. Town Hall on Burlington Road is the basic civic center, while the highway connects local households to jobs, shopping, health care, and schools in the two larger cities. Sedalia's local map is mostly homes, churches, older buildings, and the road corridor rather than a dense commercial district. The town's own website emphasizes the preservation of its heritage, and several historic properties give the community a visible past instead of leaving it only as a name on a highway sign.

That history is tied closely to education. Charlotte Hawkins Brown arrived at a one-room school at Bethany Community Church in Sedalia in 1901, then founded Palmer Memorial Institute in 1902. The school eventually educated nearly 2,000 African American students; its surviving campus is now the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum, a state historic site focused on Black history, women's history, and education. McLean House and the Palmer Memorial Institute Historic District are listed on the National Register. Sedalia today remains a small municipality, but the former campus gives its local identity a much longer reach.
