Sentinel, OK

Sentinel is a Washita County town at the intersection of State Highways 44 and 55, in the agricultural country of southwestern Oklahoma. The 2020 census counted 763 residents. R. B. Gore opened a general merchandise store here in 1898, then secured a post office in 1899; the name came from Cloud Chief’s Herald-Sentinel newspaper. A proposed railroad shaped the next phase, as the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway designated a new townsite in 1901.

Sentinel Public Schools operates a PK–12 campus with FFA, trade and industry, music, sports, and other student programs. The school district covers more than 200 square miles, so education connects the compact town to a broad agricultural area. Sentinel’s July Fourth celebration began in 1961 and remains part of its annual rhythm. Its center remains tied to the highways and school calendar across the surrounding farm country. The town is easy to picture as a highway crossroads with a school-centered calendar, broad farm territory, and a name that started in a newspaper office in Oklahoma Territory.
