About Seward

Seward is a city in Stafford County, Kansas, counted at 41 residents and 30 housing units in the 2020 Census. The first post office in northern Stafford County opened in a sod house on the Gates farm in April 1878, with Martin Gates serving as postmaster that September. A 1912 county history described Seward’s hotel, creamery, bank, retail stores, telegraph and express offices, and 300 residents along the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The post office was named for Secretary of State William H. Seward. Seward’s map still reads as a former prairie service point.
