About Shamokin

Shamokin is a Northumberland County city of 6,942 residents in the 2020 census, surrounded by Coal Township at the western edge of Pennsylvania's Anthracite Coal Region. The city grew around coal, railroads, and later textiles; its gridded streets and steep coal-country setting still show that industrial origin. The Cameron/Glen Burn Colliery Culm Bank, described locally as the world's largest man-made culm bank, makes the old extraction landscape impossible to miss. The working map is changing around that inheritance. Claude Kehler Community Park is being overhauled, the city runs the Strausser Shroyer Memorial Swimming Pool, and the nearby Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area draws visitors onto thousands of acres of former coal land for motorized and non-motorized recreation.

That outdoor economy now sits beside the city's downtown streets, schools, public works, and small commercial corridors, along with weekend activity and the ordinary errands that keep the center in use. Shamokin's local story is a coal city carrying its industrial geography forward into parks, trails, and visitor traffic.
