Sharon, SC

Sharon is a town in western York County, South Carolina, where the 2020 census counted 462 residents. The town's center is organized around York Street and Woodlawn Avenue, with a commercial district that preserves the scale of an older crossroads community. Sharon was incorporated in 1889, and the former First National Bank of Sharon remains one of its best-known buildings. The old bank's arched corner entrance still gives the district a strong visual marker.

The bank was built in 1909–10 and produced national bank notes from 1910 through 1929. It survived the Depression and later joined First Citizens Bank in 1986, when it was the oldest continuously operating national bank in York County. The Sharon Downtown Historic District, added to the National Register in 2001, includes nine contributing buildings, including the bank, storefronts, and the John S. Rainey Cotton Gin, Seedhouse, and Office. Hill Store is also listed. Sharon's streets keep a small banking, cotton, and mercantile history visible in the middle of town.
