Sharon Springs, KS

Sharon Springs is Wallace County's seat in western Kansas, a city that began as Eagle Tail Station in 1868 and took its current name in 1886 after Sharon Springs, New York. The 2020 census counted 751 residents. The Union Pacific line helped establish the town, bringing cattle, farm products, and travelers across the High Plains. Today U.S. 40 and the roads around the county seat tie Sharon Springs to the farms and ranches spread across Wallace County.

County offices, the 1914–15 courthouse, Wallace County USD 241, and local businesses give Sharon Springs a role larger than its population. The city sits in semi-arid grassland, where open horizons, wind, and long distances between communities shape daily routines. Main Street and the courthouse form a compact civic center for one of Kansas's least-populated counties, while the surrounding roads lead to ranches, farms, and sites connected to Fort Wallace and the old railroad corridor.
