Sharpsburg, NC

Sharpsburg sits where three counties meet—Edgecombe, Nash, and Wilson—and U.S. 301 runs through the center. The town grew around founder John J. Sharpe’s well, a practical stop for steam locomotives taking on water in the mid-19th century. Sharpe later donated land and materials for a school, and the town received its first charter in 1867 before being rechartered in 1913. The lines on a modern map still show how much of the place was built around movement.

Today the downtown and the old post office and Batchelor’s Store on the Edgecombe side sit inside a town whose largest share lies in Wilson County. Town government, parks, and the tri-county setting give Sharpsburg a local rhythm, while Rocky Mount and the surrounding farm country pull the wider region into its orbit. Addresses can change county without the town itself changing, and the road through the middle still ties those pieces together. That odd county arrangement is not trivia; it is the town’s daily geography.
