Sheffield, PA

Sheffield is a Warren County census-designated place within Sheffield Township on US 6, where the highway meets PA 666 at the edge of the Allegheny National Forest. The village grew around hemlock forests, tanneries, sawmills, and the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad, which reached Sheffield Station in 1864. Seven tanneries operated here at one time; Horton Crary Company made the place its headquarters, and Central Pennsylvania Lumber Company moved its main offices here in 1931. Those industries left a town shaped by timber roads, rail sidings, and the Tionesta Creek valley.

At 75 Center Street, the Sheffield Depot Preservation Society keeps that story close to the old rail setting. Its displays trace the Tionesta Valley Railway, a narrow-gauge logging line that began running in 1879 and once carried passengers and timber across 100 miles of track, along with the Sheffield and Tionesta line that served businesses by Tionesta Creek until 1943. Present-day school life centers on Sheffield Area Elementary Middle School in the Warren County School District, with older students attending Warren Area High School. Sheffield still reads as a forest-and-rail community, with the depot, Route 6, and school serving as its best-known points.
