Shelbina, MO

Shelbina is a Shelby County city laid out when the railroad reached the site in 1857. That origin still shows in the local map: US 36 and Missouri 15 meet here, two miles north of the Monroe County line, with the city serving as a road and service point for south-central Shelby County. The name comes from the county, but the railroad is the older clue to why Shelbina grew where it did. The prairie and farm roads feed into a place with its own schools, library, and downtown blocks.

Shelby County R-IV runs Shelbina's elementary and middle schools and South Shelby High School, giving the community a shared school system across the county-line region. The Shelbina Carnegie Public Library opened in 1918 after residents organized for a city library, and it still supplies a civic stop on Center Street.
