Shelby is a small, quiet community sitting right on the banks of the Kankakee River at the southern edge of Lake County. Home to fewer than 500 residents, it started in the late 1800s as a railroad depot shipping crops and dairy from local farms. Today, State Road 55 crosses the river here, linking the area to neighboring Newton County.
