Shelby, NE

Shelby is a Polk County village on the north side of U.S. 81, about eight miles west of Columbus. Its modern town site took shape after the railroad arrived in 1879, and the village was named for Peter Paul Shelby, a railroad official. Earlier post offices called Cyclone and Arcade shifted toward the tracks before settling in Shelby in 1880. The depot became the center of the first commercial district, with trains carrying farm goods, supplies, and travelers through the eastern edge of Polk County.

Farming, cattle feeding, hog production, and retailing still frame Shelby's local economy. Shelby-Rising City Public Schools operates a PK-12 campus in the village, and the community's park includes ball fields, courts, a pool, a playground, and a recreational trail. The village also hosts Shelby Days over Memorial Day weekend, carrying forward the tradition of gathering around local events. U.S. 81 and Nebraska 92 place Shelby between Columbus and the rest of Polk County, while the old rail town plan remains easy to read in its streets and public buildings.
