Sheldon, IL

Sheldon had 965 residents in 2020, in eastern Iroquois County where U.S. Route 24 meets Route 52 along the village’s northern edge. Watseka lies nine miles west, Kentland, Indiana, six miles east, and the surrounding land is the broad, flat farm country that gives this part of Illinois its long horizons. A local centennial history follows Sheldon from 1859 through its first century, with schools, churches, a post office, newspapers, elevators, and a volunteer fire department filling out the village’s early civic life.

Sheldon’s older record includes the first district school in 1859, a memorable snow in 1900, the Merchants Carnival of 1893, and a 1939 cyclone that became part of local memory. The Sheldon Horse Fair and school athletics also appear in the town’s long-running story. Today, Route 24 keeps the village linked to Watseka and Indiana, while Sheldon Township and the village government continue to serve a small cluster of homes, businesses, and farm roads.
