About Shell Rock
Shell Rock is a Butler County river town built along the Shell Rock River, close to the county’s eastern edge. A post office opened here in 1855, and the river kept shaping the place—first as a reason to settle, then as the feature that still gives the town its name and its bends. The community sits along State Highway 3 and the Iowa Northern rail line, so the old pattern of water, road, and rail is easy to see. Local schools are part of the Waverly-Shell Rock district, and the Shell Rock Community Historical Society keeps the town’s past in circulation through its museum and events. If you’re passing through, the river is the obvious starting point.
