Shenandoah, PA

Shenandoah is a Schuylkill County borough built over the Mammoth coal vein, where anthracite mining pulled immigrants from Wales, Ireland, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, and Slovakia into a tight valley. By the 1930s the town had 22 nationalities, 22 churches, and a synagogue. Coal trains once ran from three major railroad depots, a distinction no other Pennsylvania town shared. When the mines closed, garment factories helped carry families through the next era; today the borough's food shops and church festivals keep that immigrant map visible in different form.
