Sheridan, MT

Sheridan sits in Madison County’s Ruby Valley near the Ruby River and the Tobacco Root Mountains. Gold seekers began settling there in the 1860s after the Alder Gulch rush, and the community took the name of Union general Philip H. Sheridan when its first post office was established in 1866. A sawmill and later farms, ranches, and mining kept the place supplied after the first rush moved on. Sheridan is a southwest Montana town with a Civil War name, a gold-country beginning, and a valley setting that kept it on the road between the old camps.
