Shoshoni, WY

Shoshoni is a Fremont County town at the meeting point of U.S. 20 and U.S. 26, the old Yellowstone Highway route through central Wyoming. The town was established as a railroad and mining place and named for the Shoshone people of the nearby Wind River Indian Reservation. Boysen Reservoir sits just outside town, where the Wind River, Badwater Creek, and Poison Creek meet before the water continues toward Wind River Canyon.

Fremont County School District 24 gives Shoshoni a full local school line, from Shoshoni Elementary through the junior high and high school. The town’s local map also points toward Boysen State Park, camping, fishing, and the reservoir roads. Town Hall, recreation programs, and the schools all sit close to the same highway-and-reservoir geography. That makes the town easy to navigate in summer. Shoshoni is a small highway town with a bigger summer map: railroad history under the streets, school buildings at the center, and reservoir country opening out toward Yellowstone.
