About Silver Creek

Silver Creek is a Chautauqua County village of 2,637 people at the 2020 census, in the Town of Hanover on Lake Erie's shore. The creek that runs through the village supplied the name, and the early settlement dates to about 1803. Silver Creek incorporated in 1848 and worked as a Lake Erie port until railroads changed the shipping pattern. Today Routes 5 and 20 meet at Central and Main Streets, with the lake, two creeks, and the railroad lines giving the village a layered map.

The skew arch railroad bridge is the local oddity people remember: it crosses at an angle, one of the few bridges of its kind in the country. Concord grapes get their own annual turn through the Festival of Grapes, held each September since 1968 with a parade, music, midway, wine tent, and grape stomping. Silver Creek Central's elementary, middle, and high schools are physically connected, another very literal piece of local geography. The village sits where lake shipping, rail, grapes, school life, and Chautauqua County roads overlap.
