Silverton, OR

Silverton sits along Silver Creek at the edge of the Willamette Valley, roughly 14 miles northeast of Salem. The heart of town bridges both sides of the creek, creating a walkable downtown filled with locally owned cafes, antique shops, bakeries, and historic brick storefronts. Beyond Main Street, quiet neighborhoods with classic Craftsman homes climb the gentle hillsides, eventually blending into newer subdivisions and surrounding farmland. Because Silverton has only a couple of main creek crossings, traffic can bottleneck during the morning and evening rush. If you are touring homes, it helps to test your commute toward Salem and take a stroll to see how easily you can walk to your favorite downtown spots.

Silverton has a strong sense of identity shaped by deep local roots and a creative spirit. Long before settlers built sawmills along Silver Creek in the 1840s, Kalapuya and Molala tribes lived throughout the valley and foothills. Today, that history comes to life across town, highlighted by more than 30 colorful murals decorating downtown buildings. Local pride also shines through in homegrown traditions like the Homer Davenport Community Festival, an August celebration featuring local art, music, and friendly neighborhood races. Between weekly farmers markets and familiar faces at the local coffee shops, Silverton quickly feels friendly and well-connected.

Outdoor recreation is right on your doorstep. In town, Coolidge McClaine Park offers tall trees and creekside walking paths, while the Westfield Park complex features dog parks, pickleball courts, and a skate park. Just south of downtown, the Oregon Garden spans acres of specialty plantings, walking trails, and family events. Even bigger adventures wait 20 minutes east at Silver Falls State Park, where you can hike the famous Trail of Ten Falls behind towering waterfalls. Keep in mind that summer tourists flock to the park on warm weekends, adding extra cars to local roads. Most residents drive for regional errands and big-box shopping in Salem, though Cherriots buses also run between Silverton and neighboring valley towns.
