About Simpson

Simpson is a Lackawanna County census-designated place and unincorporated community in Fell Township, just north of Carbondale along Pennsylvania Route 171. Settled in 1818 and organized with Fell Township in 1845, it took the name of coal magnate Clarence D. Simpson. The Lackawanna River runs through the community, whose later story was shaped by anthracite mining, railroads, and immigrant workers. Simpson is a northeast Pennsylvania place where a river valley and a coal-era town meet.
