The area traces its roots to the 1830s, when a blacksmith named Peter Simpson set up shop near a busy crossroads. Originally known as Plain, the community eventually took the blacksmith’s name after he became postmaster, and it grew quickly once the railroad arrived in the 1880s. The town officially incorporated in 1901. You can still feel that heritage along Main Street, where preserved brick buildings and traditional storefronts stand out against the newer, expansive shopping centers closer to the highway.
