Slayton, MN

Slayton is the county seat of Murray County, Minnesota, located in the center of the county at the meeting of U.S. Highway 59 and Minnesota Highway 30. The 2020 census counted 2,013 residents. Charles Wesley Slayton, a land agent for the St. Paul and Sioux City Railroad, purchased the land, and the village was platted in 1881 before incorporation in 1887. The railroad origin still shows in the city's position between two major highways, which connect Slayton to Pipestone, Marshall, Windom, and Worthington within the southwest Minnesota region.

County Government, Court Administration, and Law Enforcement offices occupy dual buildings at the south end of Broadway, making the county-seat role visible in the street plan. Murray County Central Schools consolidated Slayton with Chandler-Lake Wilson and now serves students from communities including Avoca, Chandler, Currie, Iona, and Lake Wilson. Lake Shetek and Lake Sarah are about ten minutes away, adding a lake-and-camp landscape to the county town's government, school, and highway routines. Slayton's identity comes from being a regional hub in a rural county, with the courthouse and schools at the center.
