Sleepy Hollow, NY

Located about 28 miles north of Midtown Manhattan on the east bank of the Hudson River, Sleepy Hollow blends rich history with easy commuter access. For most of the twentieth century, the village was known as North Tarrytown and centered around a busy General Motors assembly plant. When the factory closed in 1996, residents voted to rename the village after Washington Irving’s famous short story. Today, it has evolved into a welcoming riverfront community where deep local roots meet scenic Hudson Valley charm.

The area's history runs much deeper than modern pop culture. Long before Irving wrote his ghost story, Dutch settlers referred to the local cove as a sleepy haven. Landmarks like Philipsburg Manor and the Old Dutch Church date back to the late seventeenth century, built in part by the labor of enslaved Africans whose contributions are preserved and remembered today. Alongside the legendary Headless Horseman lore and the historic cemetery where Irving rests, the village offers a grounded character that connects everyday walks to centuries of local heritage.

Everyday convenience centers around Beekman Avenue, the main downtown strip that climbs uphill from the water with a mix of neighborhood cafes, local businesses, and fantastic Latin American restaurants. Commuters have great transit options, with Metro-North trains running to Grand Central from both the local Philipse Manor station and neighboring Tarrytown in under forty minutes. Down by the water, the former GM site has transformed into Edge-on-Hudson, a growing neighborhood that brings new housing, dining, and scenic riverwalks right to the shoreline.

Outdoor recreation and community gatherings are a major draw for residents. Kingsland Point Park provides direct access to the Hudson for kayaking, picnics, and sunset views by the historic 1883 lighthouse. Throughout the year, Sleepy Hollow teams up with Tarrytown to host weekly farmers markets, summer concerts, and outdoor movie nights. When autumn arrives, the village embraces its storybook legacy with street fairs, hayrides, and festive local traditions. It is the kind of place where you can easily stroll from a morning coffee to a quiet riverside trail, all within minutes of home.
