Smackover, AR

Smackover grew around oil. The name reaches back to French descriptions of the local thickets and bayou, but the city's defining turn came in 1922, when a well opened one of the nation's largest oil fields. Wells, leases, rail cars, and oil-field work reshaped northern Union County, and the town swelled from a small settlement into a nationally known boomtown. The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources now keeps that story in one place, with exhibits on South Arkansas petroleum, an indoor reconstruction of downtown, and an Oil Field Park. Smackover still carries the old industry into the calendar through its Oil Town Festival, held each June. The city sits along Smackover Creek, a tributary of the Ouachita River, with El Dorado about twelve miles south. Museum, creek, downtown, and festival give the city a readable map: a small Arkansas place whose identity was drilled into the ground and then turned into local history.
