Smiley, TX

Smiley is a small Gonzales County city in south-central Texas, built around a lake, a cattle trail stop, and the routes that connect rural communities to San Antonio. Trader and sheepherder John Smiley settled by the long narrow water body that became Smiley Lake in the early 1870s. Cattle herds used the lake as a watering point, and by the 1880s the community had a cotton gin, sawmill, and several businesses. The post office arrived in 1884, and the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway reached the north edge of town in 1905, pulling the business district toward its depot.

Smiley has worn a lot of working-town hats: railroad stop, cotton and lumber center, poultry-processing town, and school community. U.S. Route 87 runs through the center, linking Nixon to the west and Westhoff to the southeast, while the Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District serves local students. The old lake name remains in the town's story, even as roads and school buses do the daily connecting. Smiley is a south Texas place with a cattle-water origin, a railroad-shaped main street, and a long habit of adapting to the next local economy.
