Snow Hill, NC

Snow Hill is Greene County’s seat, a small Coastal Plain town set on a ridge above Contentnea Creek. The creek’s white sandy banks gave the town its name, and its water once made Snow Hill a trading depot on the route between Wilson and the Neuse River before rail and highways took over. The 2020 census counted 1,481 residents. Today US 13 ties the town to Greenville and Goldsboro, while the courthouse, historic district, and Greene County schools keep its county-seat job visible in daily life.

Snow Hill also sits near one of eastern North Carolina’s most sobering historical sites. Fort Neoheroka, a Tuscarora stronghold in what is now Greene County, was attacked in 1713 during the Tuscarora War, and the fort site is now listed on the National Register. The town’s modern life is less dramatic but still unusually social for its size: Greene Ridge Racquet Club has operated since 2000 with clay courts, a pool, fitness space, and room for local gatherings. Snow Hill is where county history, school-day routines, court dates, and tennis all share the same small map.
