Solana, FL

Solana is an unincorporated Charlotte County community and CDP on the eastern edge of Punta Gorda. Interstate 75 forms its eastern boundary, with access at Exit 164, while the Punta Gorda area supplies the nearby city services and road network. The place-name reaches back to Fred Howard, who homesteaded here in 1873. Solana was platted in 1889, and the name combines sol, for sun, with Anna, Howard's wife's first name. Early lots were marketed to associates from New York, with private water frontage and fishing built into the area's original pitch.

That water-and-transportation mix shaped the next chapter. Fishing was the main local industry, and after the railroad station at nearby Cleveland connected the area to the Atlantic Coast Line, a loading platform called Pineapple Central briefly shipped pineapples grown around Solana. Today there is no separate Solana town hall; the CDP is read through Charlotte County and the Punta Gorda edge, with I-75 providing the obvious north-south reference. The local scoop is a place-name left over from a 19th-century land deal, a short-lived pineapple shipping point, and a modern highway boundary all sharing one corner of the county.
