Solomon, KS

Solomon sits at the meeting of the Solomon and Smoky Hill rivers, about seven miles west of Abilene and thirteen miles east of Salina. The first post office opened in 1860, the town was founded in 1866, and Solomon incorporated in 1871. Early trade followed the rivers and railroads: the first carload of wheat shipped in 1871, and a grist mill opened at the confluence in 1872. The 2020 census counted 993 residents.

That agricultural and transportation history still sits beside a specialized industrial employer. Solomon Corporation, now part of Sunbelt Solomon, began in town in 1971 and repairs, remanufactures, recycles, and sells electrical transformers and related equipment. USD 393 runs early learning through high school in Solomon, with the Gorillas as its school identity. City Park brings together a Veterans Memorial, sports courts, a swimming pool, the annual Solomon Festival, and the Brewer Scout Cabin, a 1930s Civil Works Administration building listed on the National Register.
