Soperton, GA

Soperton is Treutlen County's seat, a wiregrass town that grew because the railroad chose it. The Macon, Dublin and Savannah line reached the area in 1902 and built a depot near Lothair; Soperton, named for railroad engineer Benjamin Franklin Soper, quickly overtook the older settlement. When Treutlen County was created in 1918, Soperton became the county seat, and the 1920 courthouse still stands as the town's big civic marker. The local landscape is pine woods, farms, warehouses, and early-20th-century commercial buildings rather than grand coastal Georgia imagery. Soperton is a railroad-born county town with timber country behind it and the courthouse at its center.
