South Amherst, OH

South Amherst is a Lorain County village between Amherst and Oberlin, about 30 miles west of Cleveland. The 2020 census counted 1,581 residents. Its signature local fact is geological: Buckeye Quarry, described locally as the world's largest sandstone quarry, sits beside a community whose scale is otherwise small—about 683 homes, a handful of businesses, churches, and a volunteer fire department.
