South Dos Palos, CA

South Dos Palos is a small unincorporated community in Merced County, two miles southwest of Dos Palos. California Route 33 marks its eastern edge, putting the place in a practical Central Valley crossroads: Los Banos is about 17 miles away to the northwest, while Firebaugh is about 13 miles southeast. The post office has served the community since 1906, and the surrounding landscape is the flat, intensely worked farm country that shapes this stretch of the valley.

Rice gives South Dos Palos its strongest local story. Keisaburo Koda came to California from Fukushima, moved into the San Joaquin Valley in the 1920s, and built the operation that became Koda Farms with his American-born children. The family was known for experimenting with the work itself, including sowing rice by airplane and eventually combining drying and milling on the farm. Koda Farms’ 2024 update said the original South Dos Palos homestead was winding down and production was moving north, so the community now carries a distinctive farming legacy at a moment of transition. It is a place where the road, the post office, and a century-old rice story all meet around a very small piece of Merced County.
